Abdel Halim Hafez

was born on June 21, 1929, in the village of Al-Helwat, Sharqia Governorate. He graduated from the Institute of Arabic Music in 1948, where he studied the fundamentals of music. His first songs broadcast on the radio were “Liqa'” (Meeting), “Zalim” (Cruel), “Betqouli Bokra” (You Tell Me Tomorrow), “Safini Marra” (Be Kind to Me Once), and “Ala Qad Al-Shouq” (As Much as the Longing). Abdel Halim Hafez then began his ascent to musical fame, rising through the ranks with astonishing speed, surprising everyone, until he became one of the leading contemporary singers in a short period. He began his film career in 1955, and his first film was “Lahn Al-Wafaa” (The Melody of Loyalty) with the actress Shadia. After that, he continued his film career, appearing in fifteen films, most notably “Shari’ Al-Hob” (Love Street) with the actress Sabah, and “Dalila,” which was the first color Cinemascope film. His last film was “Abi Fawq Al-Shagara” (My Father on the Tree). He sang songs composed by many renowned composers, including Mohamed El-Mogy, Kamal El-Taweel, El-Sonbati, and finally, the musician Mohamed Abdel Wahab. The lyrics were written by famous writers such as Morsi Jamil Aziz, Saleh Gawdat, Ma’moun El-Shenawy, Hussein El-Sayed, and Mohamed Hamza, among others. He performed in most Arab and European countries. He passed away on March 30, 1977.
